As we go through life, we all experience traumatic experiences, both subtle and acute. Trauma is not only linked to acute events, like war, car accidents, or assault. Trauma is anything that is too much, too soon, too fast, or too long for our nervous system to handle without becoming overwhelmed.
As children, we encounter stressful or shocking experience all the time. At many points we have felt the jolt of the innate fight-fight response, felt our energy freeze, and then disconnected from ourselves as a defense strategy. In shamanism, this is called Soul Splitting.
If not healed and repaired, as adults we may drift through life without much purpose, feeling disconnected or numb, or cycling though the perfectionism trend of depression - hyper-vigilance- overwhelm - burnout...over and over. We live only in the head, because the body has become a hostile place.
In time, we learn to armor, or cope, by developing a 'character' which allows us to fit into society and survive in the world. However, underneath the cool, sculpted exterior, we feel empty. This is developmental trauma in a nutshell.
